wednesday and thursday (august 2–3)

9:30 PM EDT Leave Boston on time via Icelandair.

6:30 AM GMT (EDT+4) Arrive at Keflavik. No sleep on the plane. It feels like 2:30 AM to us. We won’t have a place to sleep until we can check into our guesthouse in the afternoon. We take a bus to Rekjavik and have a watery kr350 ($5) cup of coffee at the BSÍ bus station. Sleepy Hannah.

Hey, John, Chris, Leslie, and anyone else who recognizes that name: Baldur’s Gate!

8:30 AM The nice people at the Aurora Guesthouse allow us to leave our big heavy backpacks in the hall so that we don’t have to carry them everywhere. To kill time until we can sleep, we walk for like two hours to get to the Arbaer Museum, an open-air dealie with a bunch of historical houses and Viking artifacts.

2:00 PM Check into the Aurora Guesthouse and take a nap. (We’ve been awake for a little more than 24 hours.)

5:30 PM Hard to wake up, especially since we don’t have an alarm, but we manage it. We shower and have dinner at a restaurant called Vegamót. It’s raining lightly, so Hannah equips herself with her new traveling rain hat. Traveling rain hat!

8:00 PM We walk into downtown Reykjavik to go see a documentary about volcanos. It’s still light out, and will be for all but a couple hours of the night.

10:30 PM Back to Aurora for a full night’s sleep.
