10:00 AM A morning custom-made for Hannahs: coffee at Geysir tourist center, then swimming in a geothermally-warmed pool at Geysir.
1:30 PM Drive to Kerid crater. Some kind of weird crater thing.
2:30 PM Drive to Thingvellir, a large national park at the rift between the European and American tectonic plates. (They are separating at a rate of 1 millimeter per year.) The rift is in the form of a cliff; Europe is higher. We hike around the park, noting crevices here and there, some of them filled with water.
6:30 PM The bugs are very bad at the campsite, so we hang out in the tent for a while, then eat a snack dinner and play cards at the nearby three-walled shelter. (Black flies, for some reason, don’t usually fly inside a shelter like this.)
The small green dot on the right is our tent. This sunset lasted a long time.
